Adapting to a New World

Adapting to a new world

In the past six months there has been a tremendous shift in the global landscape. The COVID-19 pandemic has had an effect to such a degree that it almost feels like we’re living in a new world – a new reality. Many of us thought it would just blow over.

It has made our physical worlds smaller and our technical worlds (and our ability to reach across the globe at the touch of a button), larger as our use of technology has expanded. The question I have for you though is, how have you adapted so far?

Successes & Tribulations

If I asked you what had been your biggest:

  1. Victories
  2. Challenges

In the past six months with COVID-19, what would you say? For me personally, I’ve struggled with changes to my daily routine. Getting up and going to yoga and the gym in the morning were staples in my schedule. They were the things that got me out of the house and into and focussed on my body and health every morning and I miss that. I’ve had to adapt and find a new way to move my body from home, which if you can relate, isn’t always the easiest thing to do depending on the space you have.

I miss travelling too. I love to travel and I used to go on tons of trips and it’s been six months since I’ve been able to go anywhere and I’m finding it really restricting. I was lucky enough to be able to go on a short trip to Canada recently to meet my grandson for the first time which was such a blessing! Other than that though, I don’t know when I’ll be leaving the country again.

On the flip side, I’ve gotten a lot more comfortable with e-commerce and the virtual world and made some smart investments so there have been some positives as well. It’s all been a lot to process though.

So What Do We Do?

There’s a saying that goes something like this:

“He who can harness the crosswinds is going to benefit from it.”

There are a lot of people who have been negatively affected by COVID, but there are also a lot of people and companies who have adapted to the situation and done really well! Amazon and Zoom stocks have gone up, not to mention stocks in smaller companies such as Over The Counter – a patio furniture company – whose stocks have risen ten-fold due to the fact that a lot of people are home now and spending time in their backyards.

These companies didn’t fold and count their losses during the pandemic.  They turned around, looked at how they could benefit people and grow at the same time, and they’re thriving in spite of the chaos!

Taking Stock

So what opportunities have you taken advantage of since COVID hit? Did you make any good investments, spend more time with your family or perhaps start a different workout routine that you’re enjoying more? Kevin Hart, if you’ve seen any of his social media posts recently, has used this time to get in the best shape of his life! Have you been looking for the opportunities to grow in spite of it all or have you been thrown off course by it?

If you’re having a hard time answering that question and you’re thinking to yourself, ‘Rock, I’ve just been trying to get through it!’ then perhaps it’s time to get clear on what you want.

Achieving Clarity is Key

A lot of people have had a lot more time on their hands in the past six months than they’ve had in a long time. It’s a bit scary in some ways but in others, such an opportunity! Businesses are letting their employees work from home, people are getting the rest they need and for those who haven’t been as lucky in the employment garden of their lives, the government has stepped in and helped financially.

If you take a look at the whole thing and turn it on its head, it really is a time for you to take stock of your life, start journaling or at the very least, ask yourself, ‘what do I want?’ Seriously. This is a time for dreaming and planning and a gift for those lucky enough to get through it without being touched by the harsher side of the pandemic. That’s not to say that my heart doesn’t go out to those who’ve been hurt, been ill or even lost loved ones during this time.  It has been tough for a lot of people. If you’ve been lucky enough to get through it by merely having more time on your hands though… what are you doing with it?!

Take this time to ask yourself:

  1. What do I want?
  2. What do I REALLY want?
  3. Where do I want to live?
  4. What do I want to experience?
  5. What are the things I like to do?

What I’m saying is that if you have the option to reinvent yourself during this time, then ask yourself:

  1. What can I do?
  2. What do I want to do?
  3. What should I do?

And then go out, make a plan and pivot while you have the opportunity and time to do so. It’s so important to not be complacent during this time because, just like during The Great Depression, poverty is never asleep and it never loses a chance to steal wealth from those who are.

So wake up! Make sure you’re planning during this time. Ask yourself, in the next six months, what can I do to be successful? What ability do you have to innovate and bring something new to the marketplace that people perhaps haven’t thought of before? A lot of people are making masks, for example. That’s something most people never would have dreamed of getting into prior to this, and yet now it’s huge!

Harness the Power of the Changes We’re Going Through

Success and wealth are things that are traceable back to hard work, discipline, foresight and adaptability so keep in mind the fact that at this point, it ain’t over! We’re six months into this massive change in our world and it’ll most likely be going on for the foreseeable future, so what are the changes you have to make?

I encourage you to start talking to people (if you haven’t already) about your goals. Talk to your coach or mentor, your friends – anyone who is supportive and who can offer you sound advice and start making a plan for yourself. Figure out what the positive moves you’re going to make are, and then be persistent.

Going forward, be aware of the opportunities that are coming your way. Be aware of the things around you. Talk to your colleagues and mastermind group and discuss things going on in your industry because together we can elevate each other and help each other through this time. Not only that, but if we do so, we’ll be that much more likely to come out on top, and win… due to adaptability.
